Patricia C. Wrede

PG13- The Raven Ring (v)
-------------------

Introduction

Having read only one book by Wrede, I have no wide basis for comparison, but her style seems fairly clear and tight without cutting out human emotions. Her ability to quickly convey the individuality of even minor characters made the one book I read quite interesting. I also didn't find any parts that went too slow, despite numerous changes in plot direction and focus.

Lyra

The only book I have read of Wrede's is The Raven Ring, set in her world of Lyra. It's a fun tale about a woman from a fighting tribe who goes to the city to retrieve her dead mother's raven ring. When she arrives, she is swept up into a whirlwind of intrigue surrounding a family heirloom. The book is full of humor and hair-raising moments, and the main character makes the story upbeat with a combination of worldliness when it comes to the wilderness and fighting, and a complete lack of understanding cities and the way women are expected to behave in them. Also, there is a nicely created (and well resolved) love triangle in the latter half which helps diversify the plot. A nice, relaxing read that is neither condescending nor unbelievable.
